Protecting Undocumented Workers

It’s clear that migrant workers are vital to the functioning of our economy, contributing to the well-being of many communities across the country. However, these workers face significant challenges, particularly in today’s climate, and if you're paying attention to what's going on, you know that immigrants are facing threats of mass deportation at unprecedented levels.

As such, it is crucial that employers unite to protect the rights of migrants. Here are a few key things employers can be doing right now.

Create a Safety Plan: Employers can help their immigrant employees develop a safety plan. This includes identifying emergency contacts, ensuring that employees know what to do if they encounter immigration enforcement, and providing resources for legal assistance.

Legal Support and Resources: Employers should connect employees with legal resources. This can include referrals to immigration attorneys or nonprofit organizations that provide legal assistance to immigrants. In the community section below we have provided info about the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.

Training and Awareness: Conduct training sessions for management and staff on how to handle potential ICE raids and what to do if employees are detained. This can help create a supportive environment for immigrant workers.

Access to Employee Records: Separate I-9 files from employee records - they should be in their own folder and not co-mingled with the rest of the employee files. Make sure that any private work areas have "Employees Only" signage.

Red Cards: Red cards provide vital information to help migrants understand their rights when faced with ICE. These cards can be printed and distributed to workers, as well as to friends and family. They are available in multiple languages for greater accessibility.
